Browse the Internet.
Read the local paper.
Even turn on your television.
At some point during the past few weeks, if you look or listen hard enough, you will find some sort of reference to the City of Decatur…
And chances are pretty good that the information shared did not put the City; or its leadership, in a good light.
From Council meetings being disrupted to the lack of mowing the high grass and weeds on City right of ways. Roads needing to be paved to the possible ending of alleyway garbage pick up…
It seems like there’s plenty to discuss…
And if you pay attention to some of the various social media sites, people are doing just that.
But what; other than offering a venue to ‘raise Cain’ about things that you don’t like, good does it do?
Does it solve the issues? Does it lead to action…real, honest to goodness, positive action?
Or does it look like; as a farmer friend of mine once said, “just a bunch of hens cackling and flapping their wings stirring up the dust” …
In other words, getting nothing accomplished.
It’s easy to sit there behind a computer screen or on the phone, pointing fingers at what might seem the ‘lack of action’ taken by the City Council…
Or to try and second-guess the actions of Council President Chuck Ard regarding the behavior of another Councilman.
It takes no effort at all to fuss about what might happen or what hasn’t happened…
Especially when their only ‘source of information’ is; at best, moderately skewed.
It’s been said; in various forms, that to not speak is to speak… not to act is to act. This Editor has always taken that to mean that inaction; whether it be by Government or the people it governs, is a form of action…
And not a good one.
To know whether or not your local Government is acting in your best interests requires action on your; John and Jane Q. Citizens, part.
You cannot rely on words from others. Even this publication; conservative as it may be, will at times lean towards the right side of things. Our own thoughts and opinions will fall into news reports and perhaps influence the actions of others.
As Glenn Beck said so many times, “Do your homework.”
Research things… and not just from one or two ‘sources’.
Talk to your Council members. You may be surprised at what you really find out.
Go to a work session or better yet, attend a Council meeting. See for yourself what actually goes on.
To say there isn’t any issues or problems in Decatur would be to lie. There are… and it will take money to fund any resolution of those issues. Come budget time, priorities will need to be set and cuts to some non-essentials may have to be made. That’s the hard part of governance. The revenues are not there to do everything that everyone wants. However, it appears; so far, that most on the City Council are committed to resolving those issues as best as possible… for the good of the whole City, not a select few.
And as long as the City Council is trying to work out the issues, trying to do what’s best for Decatur, it is the civic responsibility of its citizens to work with the Council… not against them.
The point here is simple. Be constructive… not destructive.
Be heard, Decatur. Not hidden.
