In a sparsely populated meeting room, City of Decatur District 2 Councilwoman Kristi Hill and Decatur City Schools Board of Education member Peggy Baggett, held their monthly town hall meeting for their constituents.
While the number of attendees might have been small, there was still a lot of information shared by those in attendance.
Among the topics covered by Hill was the issue of alley maintenance and the recent approval by the Council for the Street Department to purchase equipment that; according to Department Director Rickey Terry, would allow the department to do its job taking care of the City’s alley ways.
Regarding the actual mowing of the alley ways, Hill said the she had recently learned that the Street Department doesn’t mow them but that Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for such. Even they don’t do the actual work, but that its contracted out to a private vendor. As it stands now, that vendor only does one trim and one cut per year and that; Hill said, is usually done during the Winter months.
Hill told the residents that in conversations with Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Dunlap, he had presented to the Mayor plans to increase the number of times alley ways were cut and trimmed to 4 times a year.
On the somewhat controversial issue of whether the City would eliminate alley way garbage pick up, Hill told those in attendance that there is concern that the alleged savings wouldn’t be that big. She also urged them to call the other two Council members that in her opinion, would probably vote no on the topic. Those two; Hill said, would be Councilwoman Paige Bibbee and Councilman Charles Kirby.
Hill also urged those in her district to attend the next work session of the City Council which will be July 31st at 5pm on the 7th floor of City Hall.
Board of Education member Peggy Baggett also spoke at the meeting. She covered topics ranging from the newly hired Superintendent Michael Douglas, who took office Wednesday to the potential traffic issues at the new Austin High School site.
The next District 2 town hall meeting is scheduled for August the 15th at 6:00 pm. It will be held in the Community Room in the Decatur Public Library. The public is invited.
